A favourite annual project is when the second year Fine Art students carve a self portrait in-the-round, from a block of regular bath soap. This year, with the emphasis on sanitising and hand washing around Covid 19 the soap project has taken on special significance beyond what your brand of soap says about you. Students were also able to easily acquire soap despite Level 3 restrictions, and with the small intimate scale, work remotely at home, while sharing their progress for input via photographs on our phones. Over three days the most poignant portraits were carved reductively from this humble, potentially life-saving medium.
